But the question that comes up with somewhat surprising frequency is about planners – specifically which planner will help you stay focused and productive with your time. 

I think this question comes up so often because we’re all seeking better solutions to our time management challenges, and looking for ways to organize all the to-dos and ideas and appointments flying around in our brain.

When it comes to goal setting, I find that my clients fall into two camps. They either have so many goals that they can’t figure out what to focus on OR they can’t identify what their goals are at all – when asked what they're working on, they draw a total blank. 

Ironically, the solution to both of these challenges is the same: you have to define where you’re heading to determine which goal (or goals) you should set right now.

To do that, you need to get grounded into your big picture vision.

Business owners are always telling me that their biggest challenge is time – specifically that they don’t ever have enough of it to get to the most important work in their business and the most important things in their life.

Earlier this week, we talked about the many benefits you’ll get from creating signature offers and service packages to sell to potential clients. 

What we didn’t talk about was HOW to create those packages – and that’s an important conversation to have because it can feel challenging and overly complicated to distill everything you can do for clients down into a set of signature offers.

Over the past few months, I’ve done coaching intensives with a variety of small business owners. These business owners differed in many ways but all had one thing in common: they spent too much time creating custom proposals and delivering custom work to their clients.

They had good intentions. Creating custom proposals felt generous, personalized and valuable for their potential clients. It also seemed like the route they had to take because they couldn’t yet see the similarities in the work they did from one client or project to the next.

The downside? All those proposals and all that custom work consumed their time and energy. It also made it hard to take steps to simplify their business, steps like developing systems and workflows or streamlining their sales process and customer journey.

Then that goal sat on my goal list without much movement – for a few months, in fact.

That’s because my goal to "host a challenge" didn’t feel specific or clear or, if I’m being honest, even urgent. I knew what I wanted to create but hadn’t identified how I would get there. So I didn’t know where to start, and I certainly didn’t know what to tackle next.

When I sat myself down and made an action plan, everything changed.
